card table repair

I can be accused of damaging a work table.?
hello boys and girls. and about 3-4 months I and a coworker gave me a bottle of liquid Cleanup to a client who wanted to clean Windows. (I am a window fitter). Now the problem. and 2 days after completion of work, work receive a phone call saying that I have shed some are table and that work would have to pay to have fixed.I then received a letter asking work me and my partner for an amount of £ 76.38p each to cover the cost of repairing the 28,08,08 or Thay will get started right out of my salary. im a window fitter, but I'm not in the cards I am employed and my boss told me not falling into that public liability insurance and I have to go out and get my own. SO (1) Do I have to pay for repair (2) Do I have to get my own insurance, but am one of those books (3) if not what can I do about this as my boss isn't accessible from PPL and im scared ill get the sack for saying anything about this to him.
In the bottom of this page, there are links to Yahoo Answers for each country. In may best for you to post this in your area (UK?) as the laws may vary. If you are considered an independent contractor, it would make sense that they expect you pay the bill. However, if you are an hourly employee, I would not. That would be something to be covered on their insurance.
